How to clean your brass hair accessories and jewellery at home

Brass hair and jewellery accessories are a lovely affordable way to add a touch of minimalist style to your look, but over time they can become tarnished and lose their shine. This can add a lovely vintage patina accent, but if you prefer to keep the warm sunshine gold finish, then with just a little care and a few helpful tips below, these will keep your brass pieces looking their best.

All our brass accessories are hand polished and treated to help prevent tarnishing, but as with all things that are worn frequently, these will need to be maintained.

Why is it important to clean brass jewellery?

Brass is a metal alloy made of copper and zinc, and it can easily tarnish when exposed to air and moisture. Cleaning your brass pieces regularly not only helps to maintain their appearance but also prevents corrosion and prolongs their lifespan.

What supplies do you need?

To clean your brass hair accessories, you will need a few basic supplies:

  • Mild dish soap
  • Soft cloth
  • Cotton swabs
  • Lemon juice or vinegar
  • Baking soda

How to clean brass hair accessories and jewellery:

Follow these steps to clean your brass pieces:

Step 1: Prepare a cleaning solution

Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water to create a soapy solution.

Step 2: Clean the accessories

Dip a soft cloth into the soapy solution and gently wipe the brass hair accessories to remove dirt and grime. For intricate designs or hard-to-reach areas, use a cotton swab dipped in the cleaning solution.

Step 3: Remove tarnish

If your brass hair accessories are tarnished, create a paste using equal parts lemon juice (or vinegar) and baking soda. Apply the paste to the tarnished areas and let it sit for a few minutes before gently scrubbing with a soft cloth. Rinse the accessories with water and dry thoroughly.

Step 4: Polish the accessories

For a final touch, you can polish your brass accessories with a clean, dry cloth to restore their shine.
